I see you’re enjoying retirement, if that what you want to call it!.

Anyway- try buying 2′ x 2′ floor mats at harbor freight and DOUBLE them up and tape the edges with duct tape.

https://www.harborfreight.com/4-piece-anti-fatigue-foam-mat-set-94635.html

I’ve used a tapped up 4′ x 6′ mat made this way for 15+ years.

Per your suggestion a few years ago I purchased a Oneway tool rest. I do like it but I was always annoyed that the handle for the banjo was so loose that I had to use one hand to keep the handle upright in order to slide the banjo around. After several years of frustration I finally took the banjo apart and added a couple of more washers at each end of the banjo. The extra washers added just enough tension to the handle which kept it upright so that it can be moved with one hand. I do not know if you have had that problem but it sure is a relief to be able to slide the banjo about with one hand. Thanks for all your in sights into wood turning.

I suggest you go a step further and say that one should make the hole slightly larger than the minimum diameter of your chuck jaws. This makes it applicable to any set of expanding jaws, no matter the chuck type or the jaw size. Saying that, one must not expect a small chuck to be able to hole a large piece of wood, securely.

Thanks again!

I found this on Amazon and it’s on my list of things to buy.

(Dicks link is to the 3M Shield on Amazon. The one I do not like because it is to heavy for me. I removed the link to avoid trouble with the Amazon people. Carl Ford)

I’m pretty sure it will be comparable to the craftsman.

I own and have used the Trend Air Shield for 10 years. I use it primarily when sanding. I am still using the original air filters. I get NO DUST in the mask, measured by blowing my nose after turning/sanding sessions.

Because everything (motor, fan, filters and battery) is contained in the mask, it is somewhat heavy and noisy but tolerable.

Mine has metal hydride batteries, but I get over 6hrs on a charge. There is an alarm that goes off when you have around 20 minutes of charge left.

Over-all I highly recommend the Air Shield

The non standard switch is made by Kedu it is a ZH-HD-1 made in China. Rated at 3.0hp, 240 volt, 20 amp.

Here is a photo. It’s really hard to get a good photo.

The black, white and green wires are from my power cord. I connected the white wire to #3 and the black wire to #1. Wire nutted the green wire to green ground leader. Note: Black and white, #1 verses #3 connection is really a don’t care because it is 220 volts, single phase.

Comment on So you want to buy a lathe? A real lathe? by Carl Ford http://carlford.info/blog/2015/07/newbie-lathe/#comment-62 Tue, 05 Jul 2016 14:10:45 +0000 http://carlford.info/blog/?p=426#comment-62 On 7/2/2016 Ron asked

I have a much used and much loved Powermatic 3520B lathe and a bunch of tool rests I have accumulated, including a couple of robust rests. If I now upgrade to a Oneway banjo, can I still use these tool rests?
Thanks
Ron

Carl’s Answer:

Ron the Oneway banjo is the standard height for a 20″ lathe. The PM 3520 banjo is a lot lower to accommodate their tool rests. To compensate for this people who by standard tool rests to use in a PM banjo have to buy them with an extra long shaft.

You will NOT be able to use PM tool rests in a Oneway banjo. You should be able to use the rest of your tool rests. The extra length shaft will just disappear inside of the Oneway banjo. The distance from head stock down to the ways (10″) does not change. So if there was room for that long shaft above the ways when in the PM banjo then there will still be room when in a Oneway banjo.

It is not an all or nothing choice. Because you will still have the PM banjo around? Thus you can just slip it back on if you want to use it?

The round washer on the bottom of the PM banjo is a lot better than the square washers that come on all other banjos (on the Oneway, etc.). The round one does not have any sharp corners that catch and thus the banjo slides around easily. So I use the round PM washer on my Oneway banjo. Making my own big beefy round washers for my Oneway 2436 lathes is high on my todo list.

Great photos. For us turners, there is much more than could be explained in these photos. This includes layout, storage ideas, and ways that you have solved so many of the issues we face daily (including light, dust collection, what tools one needs, how to address heat, air and where to keep supplies. Thanks for sharing!

Very good, impartial (I think you rained equally on everyones parade 🙂 , and complete write-up. I will refer people to this article when I get asked that question. After they read it, I will help them determine which is best for them, based upon the items on the local market.

I like doing such things because (believe it ot not) the instructor learns a lot too! I learned this leading a Boy Scout troop for years. I wish I lived closer so that I could fill up your class of 11 students.

I found the same to be true about Mike’s DVDs. I have purchased other DVDs that I can honestly say that were NOT worth the $$. This set is far above average and I have found that I can refer back to it and learn more / recall the info each time.

I also took a 3 day class with him and found him to be a good teacher / instructor, adding humor into his teachings. As with many turners who produce a video and do classes, they two are quite similar.

I like the indepentantly adjustable prongs on the Elio which I have found comes in handy on some logs
That said, I really like the screw in aspect of the Stubby drive

Too bad the Dick’s near me does not have it and its not on their website. By the way, it seems this is for cooking when camping. When I went to Dick’s, I started in the golf department. That was pretty funny.
